The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved semaglutide as a weight loss drug in June 2021. It was the first weight loss drug approved by the agency since 2014. However, semaglutide has been in use as a treatment for type 2 diabetes since 2017 under the brand name Ozempic. It was approved as a once-weekly injection under the brand name Wegovy for weight management. Studies have shown the drug's high efficacy among adults struggling with obesity and overweight.

What Is Semaglutide?

Semaglutide (Wegovy) is an FDA-approved drug used in weight management. It's a once-weekly injection, available in 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 1.7 mg, and 2.4 mg dosage forms. Adults with obesity (BMI of 30+) or overweight (BMI of 27+) and have weight-related health problems such as high blood pressure can use the drug to keep the weight off. Children aged 12+ with a BMI at the 95th percentile or more for age and sex can also use Semaglutide to manage weight.

Semaglutide was first approved as an injectable drug for type 2 diabetes in 2017 under the brand name Ozempic. Two years later, in September 2019, FDA approved an oral pill of semaglutide, the first-ever oral GLP-1 treatment for type 2 diabetes, under the brand name Rybelsus.

How Semaglutide Works for Weight Loss

Semaglutide mimics the hormone glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) that helps control appetite and food intake by signaling specific regions of the brain. It must be administered with a low-fat and low-calorie diet and an effective exercise program.

The drug belongs to a class of medications called incretin mimetics that regulate insulin release. As a weight loss management drug, it works by slowing down food movement in the stomach and reducing appetite.

How Long Does Semaglutide Take to Work for Weight Loss?

How long semaglutide takes to work for weight loss can vary from one person to another, depending on unique factors such as dosage and accompanying lifestyle changes. Mainly, you get a smaller first dose to introduce the drug to the body and minimize side effects, and then it's increased gradually. Patients usually start losing small amounts of weight within the first few months and then get more significant results as they progress with the treatment.

Timeframe for Effective Results with Semaglutide

Patients see results within weeks of using the drug. The results may vary from one individual to another, but a study of 175 participants showed a weight loss of 5.9% after three months and 10.9% or more after six months.

Can You Increase the Dose to Get Faster Results?

You can achieve faster results with a higher dose, but you should only increase it with your doctor's permission. Usually, the doctor will start you on a low dose to introduce the drug to the body without triggering severe side effects and then increase the dosage every four weeks or as your body responds.

Semaglutide Weight Loss Results

As mentioned above, the results vary from one person to another based on their body's response to the drug and their commitment to the recommended lifestyle changes. In the study mentioned above, they followed up with 102 patients after six months, and 87.3% of them achieved a weight loss of 5% plus, 54.9% lost 10% or more weight, 23.5% lost 15% weight or more, and 7.8% lost 20% or more weight.
